We are bringing over from the United States a leading expert in this field to facilitate this workshop: Chris Wagner, cp-author of Motivational Interviewing in Groups (2013, Guilford Press). He is experienced clinicians and dynamic trainers, with a keen eye on clinical skills, design and implementation.

Participants will:
  • Develop a working knowledge of MI.
  • Understand the key issues in therapeutic groups
  • Understand group practice of MI compared to individual practice
  • Be aware of the range of MI groups design options
  • Understand the four phases of MI groups
  • Be aware of the various practice exercises used in MI groups
  • Experience/observe MI groups in action 
The workshop is open to anyone, from any care setting, who would like to learn about practising MI in a group. It is particularly suited to participants with familiarity with MI and/or group work. Places are limited to allow for skills practice and coaching. 

The workshop will make use of a wide range of learning activities like demonstration, short lectures, real and simulated exercises, discussion groups and video observation.

Chris C Wagner, PhD, Licensed clinical psychologist (USA) is Associate Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Departments of Rehabilitation Counselling, Psychology and Psychiatry. He has worked across inpatient, outpatient and residential settings, working with addictions and a variety of mental disorders. He has led psychotherapeutic, psycho educational, and support groups targeting addictive behaviours, sexual behaviours and identity, HIV disease coping, schizophrenia, and organ transplant, as well as general adult mental health. Dr. Wagner is a past president of the Society for Interpersonal Theory and Research and is a member of MINT.

This is a spacious and modern facility, close to the city centre, with views over the county cricket ground and surrounding parkland.

Cost:  £350 (GBP ONLY) for 2-day workshop. There are limited reduced rate places available for registered students and groups.

This price includes training fees, morning and afternoon refreshments, and buffet lunch on both days. This workshop is being run privately, is not associated with the any organisation or institution, and includes the cost of reusable beaded name badge holders produced by HIV-positive mothers in South Africa, see
